My husband and I have travelled to New Mexico a few times over the past year and fallen in love with the culture, landscape, and food. The cuisine is full of earthy, savory, and spicy dishes.

It's characterized by regional ingredients such as chile peppers, corn, beans, squash and spices like cumin, chili powder, and cilantro. New Mexican cuisine is a unique blend of Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influence.

"Southwest" is a general term that is often used to describe the cuisine of the American Southwest region.

What's The Difference Between Southwestern and Tex Mex?

Southwestern and Tex Mex cuisines share some similarities and are often used interchangeably, but there are some major differences between the two. New Mexican, or "Southwestern" cuisine focuses primarily on the chile pepper. Chiles are central to New Mexican cuisine, whereas Tex Mex favors jalapeno peppers.

Tex Mex cuisine relies on big, bold flavor profiles and Southwest dishes are more subtle and focus on building layers of flavors. Tomatoes and tomato sauces are used more heavily in Tex Mex cooking than in Southwestern dishes.

There is a lot of crossover among Southwestern, Tex Mex, and Mexican dishes in America and all function as a kind of fusion cuisines.

Is Southwest Food Gluten Free?

Typically, Southwestern and Tex Mex food is gluten free, but there are some exceptions. Some of the sauces typical to Southwest and Tex Mex cuisines are thickened with flour, which renders them not gluten free.

Red and green chile sauce, enchilada sauce, and some soups and stews not gluten free due to the fact that they are often thickened with flour. Flour tortillas are also problematic if gluten is an issue for you.

These 25 Southwest Recipes are all gluten free and inspired by the flavors of New Mexican, Tex Mex, and Mexican cuisines.

Check out this selection of healthy Southwest recipes that you can make and enjoy at home! You'll find a variety of soups, salads, side dishes, appetizers, and dinners inspired by the ingredients and flavors of the American Southwest.
