What Is Wild Rice?
Wild Rice (also called Manoomin by the Ojibwe people) is not technically rice, but rather an ancient grain native to North America. It's an aquatic grass that grows in the cool, fresh waters of the Great Lakes region.
It's an aquatic cereal grain and comes from a reed-like plant that's harvested and then dried and processed, either through traditional methods or via modern farming techniques.
Wild rice is ubiquitous in the state of Minnesota and can be purchased in nearly every grocery store, especially in the northern regions of the state. In fact, wild rice is the official grain of the state of Minnesota. It's also grown in Wisconsin, Michigan, and parts of Canada.
The flavor of wild rice is earthy and nutty. It's pairs especially well with mushrooms, roasted meats, and vegetables.
Wild rice is incredibly versatile and can be added to soups, salads, side dishes, casseroles, stuffing, and grain bowls.
Is Wild Rice Healthy?
Wild Rice is super healthy and contains a high amount of protein, it's low in fat, and high in antioxidants. It's a great source of minerals and vitamins and is naturally gluten free.
It's healthier than white rice, as it contains more nutrients, fiber, protein, antioxidants, and has a lower glycemic index.
Make sure that if you use a wild rice blend that it's gluten free. Make sure to check the label on the package if gluten is an issue for you.
How To Cook Wild Rice
Wild rice is easy to prepare and can be added to a number of dishes once cooked. It's usually cooked with water or broth in a sauce pan on the stove top until tender. The cooking time for wild rice cooked on the stove top ranges from 45-60 minutes.
The ratio of water to wild rice when cooking is 1:4 - 1 Cup Wild Rice to 4 cups water.
Wild rice can also be made in the Instant Pot, which helps to cut down on cooking time.
Does It Need To Be Rinsed?
I do recommend rinsing the wild rice with water before cooking, just as you would any dried grains, beans, or pulses like lentils.
However, wild rice does not need to be soaked prior to cooking.
Wild rice is naturally gluten free, making it a great addition to any of your favorite gluten free dishes. Check out these 25 Gluten Free Wild Rice Recipes for some delicious dinner ideas and inspiration for your Thanksgiving or holiday menu!
